Additional info

His father was John W. Stephens and his mother named Viola Shelton Stephens.

Robert Stephens was born in Hobart/Peggs, Oklahoma and was oprhaned on 2 May 1920. His parents died in a tornado in Peggs on 2 May 1920. Also a sister of him was killed in this tornado. By then his sister Ella was 2/3 years old when the tornado killed her.

If we are to believe the newspaper The Arrow Democrat of 7 May 1920, Robert was rescued from the rubble and transferred to the P&S hospital in Muskogee. Together with 2 family members. Probably uncles. Certainly not brothers.

His name is mentioned (R.J. Stephens) in the newspaper article that you can find at the bottom of this page. I cut the piece with the mention of his name from the newspaper and you can read it below.

Peggs, Oklahoma lies in the lush eastern portion of the state just ten miles east of the Neosho River and Fort Gibson Lake. It’s a small community of fewer than 1,000 people along State Highway 82 midway between Tahlequah and Locust Grove.

The tornado struck without warning at a time when most people were home, and nearly the entire residential section simply ceased to exist. It was a worst case scenario. 71 people died, nearly a third of the town’s population of 250.

His grandmother Nannie Shelton and his grandfather James T. Shelton raised Robert J. Stephens. They raised Robert in Hobart, Oklahoma about 235 miles away from Peggs.

The Kiowa County seat, Hobart is situated on State Highway 9 two miles west of U.S. Highway 183. Located 120 miles southwest of Oklahoma City and sixty-five miles northwest of Lawton, Hobart is served by the St. Louis and San Francisco (Frisco) Railway, which runs north-south along the town's eastern limits. The town was named in honor of Garrett A. Hobart, a vice president of the United States (1897–99).
