David William Pohl was the son of Robert Anton Pohl and Martha Elizabeth (Wessling) Pohl.  He had one sister named Dorothy "Dot" Pohl. He was born on 31 December 1921 in Boston, Massachusetts.

David William Pohl never married and had no children. He graduated Wellesley High School in 1939.

Later after the war he graduated in 1951 from Babson College in Boston - BS degree in bussiness administration.

Sergeant David W. Pohl (Crew 8) was the youngest Doolittle Raider that took part in the mission. Sergeant Waldo J. Bither (Crew 12) was the oldest Doolittle Raider who participated in the Doolittle Raid (except James Doolittle).
