About the driving license of William "Bill" Farrow

William "Bill" Farrow - crew 16 - Pilot during the Doolittle raid

A set of keys and metal tag showing the South Carolina driver’s license of William G. Farrow of Darlington was found hanging from a tree limb on a farm in England in 1998 and forwarded to Darlington County Historical Commission, where it is part of the collection of the executed Doolittle Raider’s documents and memorabilia. No one knows how the keys wound up in England.  copyright picture @ warren lance wise and the Darlington County Historical Commission

An enduring mystery

In 1998, farmer Michael Buckmaster in Suffolk County, England, noticed an object dangling from a tree limb.

A small chain held several old keys and a metal tag for a South Carolina driver’s license. The name on the tag was “William G. Farrow ... Darlington, S.C.”

Buckmaster had no idea how the keychain ended up on his farm. He later contacted Darlington County officials and mailed the keychain to the county museum.

A museum historian at the time guessed that maybe Farrow loaned it to someone since photos weren’t required on licenses at the time, but no one really knows.

“It’s the biggest mystery,” Gandy said. “But I’m glad we now have it, and it’s part our collection.”

Warren L. Wise of the Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, South Caroline researched and wrote the article which was published in the newspaper on 15 April 2022. I found the article while I was researching Bill Farrow, pilot of crew 16 during the Doolittle raid. Bill was executed by the Japanese on 15 October 1942 in Shangai, China.
